RI Considers Gay Divorce

The Rhode Island Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that asks whether a gay couple married elsewhere can get divorced in the state.

Cassandra Ormiston and Margaret Chambers were married in Massachusetts in 2004. A family court judge has asked the supreme court whether he had jurisdiction to proceed, the Providence Journal reports.

The state attorney general and governor argue in amicus briefs that the state court may grant the divorce without reaching the question of whether to recognize the marriage.
