San Francisco's Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin is trimming down its non-lawyer staff, handing pink slips to about 20 legal secretaries, assistants and administrative staff.

The Recorder (sub. req.) noted that Howard Rice isn't the only firm looking for ways to strengthen its bottom line. Heller Ehrman let 65 administrative staffers go in October.

Southern California legal recruiter Larry Watanabe told the publication that all firms are looking at the bottom line as a new year and uncertain economy approaches. "They want to retain rainmakers, and to do that, you have to maintain a meaningful level of profitability," he said.
