Sharper Image Purifier Settlement Nixed

A proposal to settle a class action against Sharper Image with $19 coupons for buyers of its Ionic Breeze purifers has been rejected by a federal judge.

U.S. District Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga rejected the proposal as inadequate, the Daily Business Review reports. The legal publication calls the decision a “stunning blow” to the retailer and plaintiffs lawyer Robert Parks of Coral Gables, Fla. Parks and his co-counsel were to have received $2 million in attorney fees, the legal publication says.

Thirty-six state attorneys general had filed amicus briefs objecting to the proposed settlement and calling for cash payments to consumers. Consumer Reports has said the air purifiers didn’t perform as promised.
