Some law firms are holding meetings and dispatching e-mails to reassure lawyers who are nervous about the economic downturn.

The National Law Journal chronicles some of the actions:

• Chicago-based Jenner & Block told partners and associates in two meetings that layoffs are not in the cards.

• Boston-based Ropes & Gray sent an e-mail saying the firm is "well positioned to weather the turbulence in the marketplace.”

• New York-based Weil, Gotshal & Manges sent an e-mail noting the firm is playing a role in some prominent Wall Street bankruptcies.

• Denver-based Holme, Roberts & Owen held a meeting to announce the firm is not planning any layoffs.
