Spitzer Likely to Resign, Maybe Today, Newspaper Says

Updated: Eliot Spitzer, the embattled New York governor and former hard-charging state attorney general, likely will resign in the wake of claims that he hired a high-class prostitute in Washington, D.C., last month at a cost of $4,300, major newspapers are saying.
Citing an unnamed "person close to" the governor, the Wall Street Journal said Spitzer may resign as early as today. The New York Times said unnamed "top aides" expect the governor to resign.
If he does, the state's lieutenant governor, David Paterson, who is a graduate of Hofstra University School of Law, would step up to replace him, Bloomberg reported in a lengthy article about the lieutenant governor's background. Paterson would himself be replaced as lieutenant governor by the state senate's majority leader, Joseph Bruno.
