Stephenson Harwood Associate Dies in India Terrorist Attacks

Lo Hwei Yen, a Singapore associate at U.K. law firm Stephenson Harwood, was killed during last week’s massacre in Mumbai. The 28-year-old, who was in India to speak at a conference, was taken hostage at the city's Oberoi Hotel during the terrorist attacks, Legal Week reports. Her body was later found in the hotel.
Hwei Yen graduated from the National University of Singapore and joined Stephenson Hardwood’s shipping finance practice as a qualified solicitor in 2007, according to Legal Week.
Chief Executive Officer Sunil Ghadia, who was flown to the firm’s Singapore office this week, expressed the firm’s grief in a statement and offered support to Hwei Yen’s family.
“Hwei Yen was an outstanding lawyer, but more importantly a much loved and valued colleague and friend with a kind and generous personality,” Ghadia said in the statement."We are doing everything we can to support the family and our colleagues at the firm."
Field Fisher Waterhouse partners Mark Abell and Christopher Jackson, who were also in Mumbai during the attacks, were safety evacuated from the Trident Hotel last week, Legal Week notes.
