Student Hurricane Network Provides Legal Help for Katrina Victims

Students at the University of Illinois law school are collecting donations in large orange buckets at football games to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The students are among the volunteers collecting money for a national group called the Student Hurricane Network Gulf Coast Relief Fund, the Daily Illini reports. The money collected in Illinois will fund a trip to New Orleans for about 50 law students who want to provide legal help for hurricane victims.

The website of the Student Hurricane Network says participating law students are helping legal aid organizations catch up with massive caseloads and doing legal research for Katrina-related litigation. The network was founded by law students at Tulane and other schools. More than 100 schools are participating.

Nice mention of a great volunteer-run organization! And very timely given the recent gulf coast hurricanes. Their website link has actually changed though. SHN just launched their new site and URL at http://www.studentjustice.org/.
