Target Class Action OK’d, Seeks Web Access for Blind

Plaintiffs who contend Target failed to make its Web site accessible to the blind have won class action status for their lawsuit.
U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of San Francisco certified two class actions, the Wall Street Journal reports (sub. req.). One is a nationwide class action alleging violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Another is a California class action alleging violation of state laws.
The judge also denied Target’s motion to dismiss the suit on the ground that it has improved its Web site, making the suit moot.
“This is a tremendous step forward for blind people throughout the country,” Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said in a statement. “All e-commerce businesses should take note of this decision.”
