Texas Law Firms Expanding Out-of-State

A number of big firms in Texas are getting bigger, but much of their expansion is out-of-state.

Texas-based law firms are expanding by increasing the size of their offices located elsewhere, with Dallas-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld leading the pack. A little over 70 percent of the firm's 1,023 lawyers work in offices outside Texas, according to a Texas Lawyer article reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

Although the struggling economy poses some challenges, managing partner Mark Evans of Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani says it's still a good time to be thinking about expansion. Some 27 percent of the 418-lawyer firm's attorneys now work out-of-state, and that percentage is going to increase over the next five years, he predicts.

"We find ourselves in the areas that we are in doing great and growing," Evans tells the legal publication. "Actually, we think the reductions elsewhere are going to provide opportunities for us to hire some people."
