The top enforcement lawyer for the Securities and Exchange Commission in New York is jumping to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, sources tell the Wall Street Journal.

Mark Schonfeld, who has held his current SEC position since 2004, is expected to leave his post within a month, the Wall Street Journal story says. He is currently overseeing a probe of Wall Street banks’ timing in accounting for subprime losses and investigating whether hedge funds spread false rumors.

Past accomplishments included probes of trading abuses at mutual fund companies, resulting in investor settlements, and a global settlement with 10 Wall Street firms related to their research and investment-banking activities, the story says.
