Top Va. Tech Payment: $180k Per Death

Settlement amounts were announced today in a plan to compensate victims of the April massacre at Virginia Tech and their estates.
Families of the 32 students and faculty shot to death by a troubled student will each be offered $180,000 under the plan, which is funded by donations, according to the New York Times. Surviving victims who spent at least 10 days in the hospital will qualify for $90,000, and free tuition for as long as it takes them to complete their undergraduate education. Lesser compensation is available to those with lesser injuries.
As discussed in an earlier ABAJournal.com post, the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund is being overseen by Kenneth R. Feinberg. A Washington, D.C., lawyer, he also fulfilled this role concerning a $7 billion fund for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. At last report, donations to the Virginia Tech fund totaled about $7 million.
