Tort Refomers, Trial Lawyers Rank States

Trial lawyers and tort reformers issued competing state rankings Wednesday.

A survey of general counsel released by a tort reform group found that general counsel perceive West Virginia as the state with the most unfair legal environment.

Also in the bottom five were Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Illinois, according to the survey by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Legal Reform. The state with the best environment was Delaware.

Jon Haber, chief executive officer of the trial lawyers group American Association for Justice, said in a press release the survey is "propaganda." AAJ released its own list of “The 10 Worst States To Get Sick Or Injured In.” States on the list had laws limiting damages.

The Recorder reports the survey was launched as the Chamber readies an ad campaign that promotes tort reform in California.
