Trial: Mafia Competed to Murder Mob Robbers

No one was too surprised when a Bonnie and Clyde team of robbers who targeted Mafia-run social clubs was murdered on Dec. 24, 1992. But an ongoing trial is providing new details about their murders 15 years ago near a Queens, N.Y., intersection, where each reportedly was shot three times in the back of the head.

Mobsters allegedly competed for the honor of doing in Thomas and Rosemarie Uva, who had not only cleaned out their confederates' card games and robbed them at gunpoint of money and jewelry but forced victims to drop their pants, reports AP. Details of the murder are coming out at the ongoing trial of a man accused of committing it, Dominick "Skinny Dom" Pizzonia, a reputed captain in the Gambino crime family.

Although several members of competing crime families apparently attempted to claim credit for the killings, the prosecution -- relying on what a defense lawyer for Pizzonia describes as an unsavory cast of Mafia turncoats to make their case -- claim the Gambino crime family was responsible. The defense is pointing the finger at the Bonanno crime family.
