The Yugoslav war crimes tribunal today convicted the leader of rebel Serbs in Croatia and sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

Milan Martic was convicted of murder, torture and persecution for committing hundreds of murders as the leader of Serbs who rebelled in 1991, Associated Press reports.

Presiding Judge Bakone Moloto said Martic plotted with other Serb leaders with the goal of creating a unified Serb state.
