U.S. Opposes Italian Trial of Soldier

The murder trial of U.S. soldier Mario Lozano begins today in an Italian courtroom, but the defendant will not be there.

Lozano is accused of killing an Italian intelligence agent who was traveling to the Baghdad airport with a journalist he had freed from kidnappers.

The United States disagrees with the prosecution and says it will not send Lozano to stand trial, according to a Los Angeles Times story.

Lozano has said he fired at the agent's car because it was approaching a checkpoint at about 50 mph and did not stop after a warning shot. The U.S. military has determined Lozano acted appropriately.
