U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones Has Stroke, Is Still Alive

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, a Democrat who is the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, has suffered a serious stroke, but she is still alive.

Earlier news reports said she had died, but she is in critical condition at Huron Hospital in East Cleveland, according to the Associated Press, which also initially reported her death.

At a news conference today, Dr. Gus Kious, president of Huron Hospital, said the congresswoman collapsed behind the wheel of her car while driving because of "a very serious brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm that burst in an inaccessible part of her brain." Doctors who evaluated her say she has limited brain function.

That is another term for a hemorrhagic stroke, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Tubbs Jones, 58, is a five-term member of Congress who is also a lawyer. "A family member said Tubbs Jones had not regained consciousness since being transported to the hospital Tuesday night," reports the Detroit Free Press.

She was taken to Huron Hospital by ambulance, after a Cleveland Heights police officer saw her car weaving through traffic, apparently out-of-control, last night, the newspaper says.
