5 Justices Quit Private Clubs; ‘Very Cool Graphic’ Shows Their Political Leanings

On a scale of deep blue (liberal) to dark red (conservative), U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is the reddest of the red and Justice John Paul Stevens is as blue as it gets.

At least, that's what a color-coded timeline described by the Washington Post as a "very cool graphic" shows. And it also depicts the political leanings of the other justices in what Target Point Consulting, which developed the chart, describes as an ideological history of the court from 1937 to 2007.

Meanwhile, in unrelated supreme court news, the Blog of Legal Times reports that at least five justices quit private clubs after Congress passed a law last year prohibiting them from accepting free memberships valued at more than $50.

The club membership information is provided in financial disclosure forms that justices filed this spring. They were publicly released today, the BLT notes.
