Voter ID Law Upheld in Michigan

The Michigan Supreme Court today upheld a state law requiring voters to present photo identification.
The court split along partisan lines, the Detroit Free Press reports. The five justices in the majority were nominated by Republicans, and the two dissenters were nominated by Democrats.
The law permitted voters who did not have an ID to cast a ballot if they signed an affidavit of identity. Those who needed an ID card but could not afford it could have the $10 fee waived.
The right to vote is fundamental but “not without limits,” according to the majority opinion.
