What Michelle Obama Didn’t Like About Working at Sidley Austin

Posted Oct 6, 2008, 10:45 am CST
By Martha Neil

A new biography about Michelle Obama discusses in detail what she didn't like about her job, early in her career, as an associate attorney at Sidley Austin.

Ambitious and eager for responsibility, she found a number of assignments unexciting, reports the Chicago Sun-Times, summarizing a lengthy Sunday magazine article in the Washington Post by author Liza Mundy. Plus, more so than most associates, Obama, whose name at the time was Michelle Robinson, didn't hesitate to push hard for better work.

"Not many people went over my head," recalls Quincy White, a now-retired partner at Sidley who headed the firm's marketing practice at the time. But Robinson did, complaining to Sidley's human resources department.

He and an HR representative talked, agreeing that Robinson, essentially, was "complaining that she's being treated like she's a second-year associate," recounts an excerpt from Mundy's book, titled simply Michelle. Says White: "I couldn't give her something that would meet her sense of ambition to change the world."

Focusing on her career, the 25-year-old had told her mother, in the summer of 1989, that she wasn't going to worry about dating, the Post article says. But then she was assigned to mentor Barack Obama, who was a 27-year-old law student and summer associate at the time.

Today, of course, he is the Democratic presidential nominee, and Michelle Obama is his wife of nearly 16 years.

Seeing how they’ve been married 25 years, I’m guessing they married in 1983 before meeting in 1989.  Odd couple.

Back on track - article is about Michelle.  Although why anyone would have a biography BEFORE they have done ANYTHING of note is beyond me!  So Michelle has a biography already?  Day one, got up, had oatmeal for breakfast.  Went to work.  Didn’t like my assignment so I complained.  Had lunch.  Did more work I didn’t like.  Went home after 12 hours of work I hate.  Day 2 - see day one.  Gee. when I was young, I did work I didn’t like also.  Maybe I should have a biography.

The bottom line is that Michelle Obama didn’t want to “pay her dues” like everyone else.  She expected to start at the top.

It sounds like Barrack and Michelle are two people who think that working hard and “paying your dues” doesn’t matter.  I guess we will find out if it does.

  7. Posted by RDH - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 5 hours, 36 minutes ago

D.L.,  Did you make the same comment about George W.  in 2000? -because he certainly didn’t “pay his dues” when he was 25.

  8. Posted by LC - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 5 hours, 36 minutes ago

    Philip Berg should be disbarred.

    3. Through birth abroad to ONE United States citizen
In most cases, you are a U.S. citizen if all of the following are true:

    One of your parents was a U.S. citizen when you were born;
Your citizen parent lived at least 5 years in the United States before you were born; and
At least 2 of these 5 years in the United States were after your citizen parent’s 14th birthday.*

It is clear from his findings that he does not contest that Obama’s mother is a U.S. Citizen, nor that she lived her life in the U.S.

Oh, please.  The overwhelming majority of associates at large firms eventually leave, largely because the work is dreadfully boring and the hours are so excruciatingly long.  One finds oneself learning more and more about less and less.  And I suspect that Mrs. Obama feels the same way that I do about it: I don’t knock those who like it, but it just wasn’t for me.

  10. Posted by Ellen Barshevsky - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 5 hours, 31 minutes ago

Yes, life is boring at as an ASSOCIATE, but she met Barrack Obama, and now she’s going to be famous.

So at least she can say she worked at a big law firm.

I don’t like working at a big law firm, and I did NOT meet my boyfriend there when I summered in Manhattan.  He does not agree with my politics, but he says that “POLITICS MAKE FOR STRANGE BEDFELLOWES”.

That means that you never know who you will be sleeping with.  I told him that does NOT apply to us.  He agreed with me.

  15. Posted by Liberal Lover - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 4 hours, 24 minutes ago

When did being liberal become a bad thing? Look up the definition of liberal and all of its synonyms.  That is exactly waht this country was built on and is supposed to be.  Conservative by definition means remaining with tradition - no change.  Lets put women back in the kitchen, blacks at the back of the bus, and leave the poor people on skid row.  Because liberal by its very definition means tolerant of all views and positions, it has been demonized by people who only want to talk one thing.  No one is right all the time. I think that most people understand this.  Liberal is GOOD and woe be unto us the day that the ABA is not.  Just like an earlier comment said, everything is not for everyone - and to each his own.

  16. Posted by CNQ - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 4 hours, 21 minutes ago

All this says to me is that Sibley is like all the other firms doing business “the way it’s always been.”  Here we have one more example of a law firm losing a bright, ambitious, hard-working associate because it didn’t care enough and/or couldn’t be flexible enough to give her at least one or two projects she would be interested in. Further, what’s wrong with challenging the system?  Isn’t that what lawyers are supposed to do every day?  Further, if Michelle Obama didn’t stand up as her own advocate who would have done so for her?  Clearly no one.  It’s Sibley’s loss.

I agree with liberal lover that “liberal” is a good thing.  It is what our country was built on.  A strong belief in personal rights, freedoms and responsbilities.  Unfortunately today when the term “liberal” is used it’s most often referring to a socialist.

  19. Posted by DCEsq. - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 55 minutes ago

The news value of this article is, what, I’m asking?  And is this a series of comments by lawyers?!

  20. Posted by associate - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 53 minutes ago

    Liberal Lover,

You probably love liberals and hate conservatives because you have no idea what those words mean in today’s society.

Liberal = socialism (rob the rich, give to those who won’t work)
Conservative = capitalism with some safety nets (unemployment, short time partial disability, etc.)

Michelle hated/hates associate life.  Wow, and to think, so many love having crappy assignments and long hours.  Welcome to the real world.

  21. Posted by PRE - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 52 minutes ago

CNQ:  How do you know she was hard working?  There are many bright new attorneys (and other workers) who simply don’t want to do anything that does not interest them.  Well, we all want projects that are interesting, but what if your client’s case involves a large document review or due dilligence, do you tell your client that we don’t have enough lawyers who are willing to do what it takes to get your work done?  Sometimes - especially early in your career - you have to be a team player and do the work that needs to get done.  Associates who can grind through the tough part of a case or deal - and do a great job with a half-positive attitude - will get rewarded with better work.  That is what I do - I want to give work to lawyers who I know can get the work for the client done well—even it is sometimes not interesting.

Marry Barack….....save the world! WOW, I can hardly wait (oozing sarcasm).

  23. Posted by BC - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 44 minutes ago

The political nature of some of these comments are rediculous.  LIberal does not equal socialism. And Conservative does not equal remaining with tradition.  Democrats have their views on how things could be run, and Republicans have theirs.  Why, when some group has a different view point, they automatically become “socialits” or as has been stated in other articles “communists” is utterly retarded.  This whole thing where conservatives hate liberals, i.e., republicans hate democrates, and vice-versa is reminiscent of the McCarthy communist witch hunts of the 1950s and 1960s.  You should be able to have whatever belief you want.  THAT is what our country was founded on, and you all should stop criticising people for having different view points.

And I agree with comment 22, despite me defending her numerous times before…dear lord Ellen, come on.

  24. Posted by LT - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 31 minutes ago

Some large law firms take care of the assignment to interesting/challenging work for new associates by having an active pro bono program.

  25. Posted by Hadley V. Baxendale - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 29 minutes ago

Um, WEM:  Our country was founded on conservative principles, the same ones you describe.  There was nothing “liberal” about taking power from the king and returning it to a process consistent with Natural Law.  Personal rights, freedoms and responsibilty describe the conservative view, which also includes free market; the liberal view would control the free market process to keep some people, right or wrong, from gaining advantage over others.  Read Edmund Burke, John Locke, etc.

<<I agree with liberal lover that “liberal” is a good thing.  It is what our country was built on.  A strong belief in personal rights, freedoms and responsbilities.>>

  26. Posted by David Barth, CFA - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 8 minutes ago

    Even a whiner then.

She doesn’t understand that she didn’t have the skills to take on more responsibility.  Of course, arrogant Michelle always knows best.

Maybe if Obama would have increased her marketable skills she would have gotten more responsibilities.  In this day of legal malpractice I would assume her superiors knew where she would be assigned better than she.

All 25 year olds know more than anyone over 50.  The problem with Obama she still believes she know best even though her only noticeable accomplishment has been in dirty Chicago politics.

“We get so soon old and so late smart.”  Evidently, the Obamas are slow learners and don’t do well without a script.

It’s nice to see that even this site can be filled with comments from nasty, hate-filled lawyers—just like the rest of the Internet. Proof that even lawyers can lack decency and a brain.

  28. Posted by Andy the Lawyer - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 2 hours, 15 minutes ago

I’m slowly becoming convinced that if Ellen works at a “big law firm,” it’s as the bagel girl.

Response to JD—“Love stories,” even among lawyers, can be entertaining.  If you don’t like the Obamas’, you might prefer the McCains’—starting with John McCain’s return from Vietnam to find his wife Carol had been crippled and disfigured in a horrible car crash, continuing with his 3 ywars of drunkenness and adultery, and ending with his abandonment of his wife and kids to run off with Cindy—blonde, 17 years’ younger and a multimillionairres.  Hooray for romance!

  29. Posted by Bill - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 2 hours, 3 minutes ago

The words “liberal” and “conservative” no longer have the traditional meanings they once had, as in the “classic liberal” (Thos. Jefferson).  And these labels also are not synonymous with Democrat or Republican.  Modern-day Dems are not at all liberals in the classic sense, and modern-day Republicans are not traditional conservatives.

And I often see people confuse democratic with Democratic and republican with Republican.

One last point: oh yeah, Ellen is just fun to watch.  Ellen, not only is your shift key stuck, but your spell-check apparently is AWOL.  You’re an associated at a big law firm?  Yikes.

And tell us more about your boyfriend and what you tell him and whether he agrees with you.  Please.  We all really want to know.

  30. Posted by J.D. - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, 58 minutes ago

^ Yep. Just more evidence that McCain is an authentic Democrat. Obama is a socialist. There is no conservative in this race.

  31. Posted by MMNGC - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, 45 minutes ago

This is a nothing story. For crying out loud, LOTS of associates leave because they don’t feel like they are being challenged, or don’t like the work. That’s also what 25 year olds do. No reason to criticize her unduly for being normal. This is only a story because it’s Michele Obama, and people are only being critical because it’s her. Good grief people. Let’s move onto substantive things, and please, abajournal, let’s get something with some real substance on your website.

All of you, stop whining.  Our country is in a massive crisis.  Don’t fall prey to distractions like arguing over Michelle Obama or Sarah Palin.  Take a long hard look at how you live your life and what we as individuals and constituents can do to effect positive change in our communities.  Based on what I can see, Michelle Obama and her husband have taken the initiative of seeking meaningful change at a time of great crisis in our country.  Instead of criticizing and character assassinating, do some research and write your congressman or senator.  If we just sit around and wait for the current batch of elected and appointed officials to figure this out while we have virtual salon debates over political personalities, we are in big trouble.  It’s time to make our voices heard.  WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE PEOPLE!

  33. Posted by DR - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, 31 minutes ago

To #30:  ABA publishes these types of newsflashes and articles because it captivates readers.  I mean, week after week you can find numerous people responding to these types of “human interest” and “work/life” balance articles.  Go to articles about specific cases or other substantive issues…and you’ll find very little reader comment.  The shallow stuff sells!  Plus, people like reading this sort of stuff because it makes them feel superior.  :)

  34. Posted by MMNGC - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, 11 minutes ago

    To #32
Yeah, I get it. Except for the last sentence, I was addressing the hostility with which people were criticising someone for doing something that is just ordinary and not uncommon.

  35. Posted by DR - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, 1 minute ago

To #33:  I agree wholeheartedly.  Actually, I think there is a lot of turnover in every profession (at that age and sometimes older) simply because as a young person you have ideas about who you want to be, where you want to work, what you want to accomplish…but often you find out quickly that your ideas were not based in reality or you find yourself miserable for other reasons.

Michelle’s grass roots are green, but not from the grass; her salary at the Hospital is $375,000 a year, and I’ll bet she doesn’t work weekends.

  37. Posted by R - 2 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, 35 minutes ago

I’m struck by the fact that if you take David Barth’s otherwise nonsensical comments about Michelle Obama and make a slight change, substituting Sarah Palin for Obama, his comments suddenly make a lot of sense. Thusly:

“She doesn’t understand that she didn’t have the skills to take on more responsibility. ... The problem with Palin is she still believes she knows best even though her only noticeable accomplishment has been in dirty Alaska politics. ... Evidently, Palin is a slow learner and doesn’ do well without a script.”

John McCain is not a natural born citizen of the U.S.  Suit can only be dismissed with prejudice.

Section 1 of Article II of the Constitution contains the clause:  No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

McCain was born in the Panama Canal before adoptions to said Article.

    Dear screamer:

Paid dues?  Um, it takes more than 2yrs as an associate to “pay your dues” for President of the United States of America.  For goodness sakes, it takes 10 years to ‘pay your dues’ for partnership.

  45. Posted by atty86 - 2 months, 4 weeks, 21 hours, 1 minute ago

I agree that many associates leave their first law job, in whole or in part, because they feel they are not being challenged.  The problem here is not the Michelle is any different than any other young associate; the problem is that the author of her biography (and the authors of these articles) act like she is abnormal, i.e., special, because she was bored and left the job for what she saw as greener pastures.  They are trying to make it sound like she was so brave and so much smarter than everyone else because she left a boring job—puh-lease!  It happens everyday in law firms across this country.  Good lawyers like to be challenged, and if they don’t feel challenged, they move on.  There is no story in that.  It’s called life.
‘Just another example of trying to make a story out of nothing and win sympathy (or votes) instead of focusing on the real issues in this election.

You have to admire a 2 year associate asking for more meaningful work -what’s wrong with that?  I never had the courage to do it - I wish I did.

And for those distracters - my 401 and 457 k plans lost more than half its value.  My e-trade account lost 50% of its value.  These are more important issues that making snide comments about someone in the public eye.

Who would have thought lawyers, the suppposedly educated class would be so idiotic?

We were a community that shared in each others success. NOT JEALOUS.  Most comments appear to be posted by educated persons who have forgotten that we are our brother(s) keeper.  Lets rid ourselves of the crawfish attitude; reaching up to pull down those who are struggling to climb out of depravity. To #52:  I respect you’re comment; white, yellow, red or black, we all want the best education and opportunities for our children.  Your comment certainly provokes thought based on race.

Barrack attended Punahou, an elitist preparatory academy in Honolulu.  A vertual who’s who of the most prominent Honolulu families; very expensive.  Now Barrack, doesn’t say too much about his grandfather’s occupation but he does say his grandmother was employed by a bank (management level, I believe).  His mother was employed at University of Hawai’i; tenure pays well.

In reality, it probably DID matter WHO Barrack Obama’s family member’s were and what they did in order for him to be accepted at Punahou.

I don’t know about Michelle Obama but I am confident that Barrack Obama (because he grew up in Hawai’i and not the South), did not grow up with the opposition or lack of opportunities that you seem to imply in you comment

I can’t even believe the ABA Journal posted this stupid article.  To what end?  Anti-Obama?  To give a plug for someone’s book?  To purposely raise hackles?  It’s very “Enquirer-like.”  BFD - the woman (any woman) wanted more challenging/interesting work and the “all powerful partners” think she’s overstepping her bounds - so she’s put in her place.  Sadly, that happens all the time - it makes the partners feel better about themselves.  And for that Ms. Obama is not a team player?  And so what - the then Ms. Robinson planned to put off marriage to concentrate on her career - and plans changed.  So frickin’ what?  Why is this such a big deal and since when is it bookworthy - it just goes to show you what some people will do for money.  Shame on the author and shame on the ABA.
