Addressing a significant difference between the sexes, Germany is issuing bulletproof bras to female police officers.
"The underwear is designed to be worn under a bulletproof vest to better absorb the impact of gunshots. More than 3,000 frontline officers are being encouraged to swap to safer lingerie," reports the Guardian.
The BBC provides a photo of the white, sports-bra-like standard-issue new underwear, which features the German word for police, "polizei," in capital letters around its lower perimeter.
"I always thought normal bras posed a safety risk, and I wanted to change that," says Carmen Kibat, who serves as an adviser to the Hamburg-based Bundespolizei, which is Germany's federal police force. When a female officer is wearing an ordinary civilian bra, "the impact of a bullet can push the metal and plastic bits of the bra into an officer's body, causing serious injury," she says.
