A legal blog is characterizing layoffs at White & Case as a “trifecta” because the law firm has the highest number of lawyer layoffs, staff layoffs and total layoffs.

White & Case announced the layoffs of about 200 lawyers and 200 staffers last Monday, at the same time as two other law firms. Total law firm layoffs for the day amounted to more than 730 lawyers and staffers, making it a record-setting day for law firm layoffs, according to Law Shucks in a post also on Above the Law.

Prior record-setting layoff days were Jan. 29 and Feb. 12, according to the blog. More than 600 lawyers and staffers were laid off on each of those days.

Law Shucks notes that the latest layoffs put White & Case back on top of the chart for most layoffs in the three categories, marking the “ignominious feat” of a trifecta.

The blog also notes some layoff trends. Many firms are engaging in “stealth layoffs,” and many have made multiple rounds of layoffs. The record-holder for multiple layoffs is British firm Halliwells, now in its fourth round of redundancy consultations.
