A Michigan Appeals Court judge is the subject of a criminal investigation after a loaded gun was reportedly found in his carry-on luggage on Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Authorities said Judge Henry William Saad, 68, who has a permit to carry a firearm, was briefly detained after federal Transportation Security Administration personnel spotted a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver in his luggage around 8:30 a.m. as it was going through an X-ray machine, according to the Detroit Free Press and WJBK.

However, the judge made his flight to Fort Myers, Florida, after police processed him at the scene for the possible misdemeanor ordinance violation, according to WDIV. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office will determine whether to pursue the case after an investigation is completed.

Ordinarily, those found with firearms are processed at a police station, an airport spokesman told WDIV, but it is up to the officer’s discretion.

A spokesman for the state court administrative office told the Free Press that Saad’s status on the appeals court is unchanged following the incident.
