ABA Journal wins magazine of the year from business press group for third time in a row
The ABA Journal took home the top honor Tuesday, when it was named national Magazine of the Year by the American Society of Business Publication Editors.
Updated: The ABA Journal took home the top honor Tuesday, when it was named national Magazine of the Year by the American Society of Business Publication Editors.
The win was the third in a row for the Journal in the category for publications with 11 or fewer issues per year. Before that, in 2022, the Journal received an honorable mention in the contest, the ASBPE Awards of Excellence.
Also known as the Azbees, the awards contest honors the best in business-to-business media.
John O’Brien, the editor and publisher of the Journal, credited the magazine’s staff members for the win.
“The award is a testament to the immense talents of the staff and the hard work they put in every day on behalf of the ABA and its members,” he said.
Wilson Adam Schooley, the chair of the ABA Journal Board of Editors, said, “Recognition as national Magazine of the Year for three consecutive years is an extraordinary accolade that speaks not only to the remarkable talent of our journalists but that rare and revered quality: sustained excellence. The Journal has proven itself a singular publication across all professions nationally, and our Board of Editors is extremely proud of the Journal staff and editor, whose consistently hard and phenomenal work make the magazine the preeminent publication it is.”
Three Journal staffers also received national awards in categories for magazines with 11 or fewer issues per year. They are:
• Julianne Hill, legal affairs writer, who won a National Silver Award in the feature category for her article “Finding a Pathway: Assisting Native American and Indigenous law students requires confronting the challenges they face”
• Anna Stolley Persky, legal affairs writer, who won a National Bronze Award for her feature “Formidable Foe” in the Individual Profile category
• Kevin Davis, managing editor, who received a National Bronze Award in the feature category for his article “No Small Matter: Even a wrongful misdemeanor conviction can change someone’s life forever”
Hill, Persky and Davis won Gold Awards for their stories in the regional ASBPE contest for magazines with 11 or fewer issues. Other Journal awards in the in the Upper Midwest Region Awards, announced in April, are:
• Danielle Braff, legal affairs writer, who won a Bronze Award in the Enterprise News Story category for “From behind bars to passing the bar”
• Victor Li, assistant managing editor, who won a Bronze Award in the podcast category for “How generative AI can help you market your legal practice”
• Amanda Robert, legal affairs writer, Hill and former staffer Matt Reynolds, who received a Bronze Award in the Special Section category for “Legal Rebels 2024: Game Changing AI”
• Hill, who won a Silver Award in the Web Feature Article category for “Is this a key moment for the bar exam?”
• Li, who won a Bronze Award in the Regular Department category for “Business of Law”
