Downey Brand laid off 17 staff members Wednesday, adjusting for the 23 lawyers this year who have either already left the firm or will leave the Sacramento, Calif.-based law firm by the end of this month.

The layoff group “includes no lawyers because we remain very busy with legal work,” managing partner Scott Shapiro told the Sacramento Business Journal. “We did this very difficult cut because we have more staff than we need due to attorney departures.”

There are currently 99 lawyers listed on the attorney directory on the law firm’s website. In June of last year, the firm’s attorney roster topped 120.
