Representatives from two federal agencies at a legal job fair said the stimulus package will likely create new legal jobs in their departments.

Recruiters for the agencies, the U.S. Department of Labor and the Environmental Protection Agency, said they have no current openings for entry-level lawyers, but legal positions could be added because of the stimulus package, according to the Fulton County Daily Report.

The news was one of the few bright spots at the job fair sponsored by the Spring Southeast Legal Hiring Conference.

Third- year Georgia State law student William Corriher said he has been told by several public interest groups and employers that they are getting many resumes for entry-level legal jobs from people who are overqualified, according to the story.

“The competition is fierce,” Corriher said. He has applied for about 40 advertised legal jobs and is also considering unpaid fellowships, the story says. Some employers have shown some interest, but so far he’s gotten no job offers.

Meanwhile, several 2Ls at the job fair told the publication they fear that they will be competing for jobs next year with unemployed 2009 graduates. GSU law student Matthew Brown told the Fulton County Daily Report he knows many 3Ls having trouble in the job market. “I know people who’ve gotten offers and had them rescinded,” he said.
