Those mourning the loss of a pet can hang a commemorative item on a giant orb-shaped holly bush on the front lawn of lawyer Kelly Heitkamp’s law office, located in Longview, Texas, according to coverage in the Longview News-Journal. Owners of fur babies, feathered friends and other beloved pets can be memorialized with a photo (preferably laminated), a collar or a toy.
“The purpose of the tree is for survivors to remember and celebrate their love and to share their loss and memory with others who understand that level of grief during this difficult time of year,” wrote Heitkamp in an email.
She borrowed the concept from a Christmas pet memorial in Central Park in New York City.
The remembrance is open until Jan. 6.
