A federal appeals court on Friday upheld restrictions on protests outside the U.S. Supreme Court.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled on Friday, report the New York Times, the National Law Journal (sub. req.), the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal Law Blog.

The decision upholds a ban on demonstrations on the Supreme Court’s outdoor, white marble plaza. The unanimous decision, written by Judge Sri Srinivasan, points out that demonstrators are allowed to gather on sidewalks along the plaza.

The court ruled in an appeal by Maryland resident Harold Hodge, who was arrested in January 2011 for standing on the plaza while holding a sign that read: “The U.S. Gov. Allows Police to Illegally Murder and Brutalize African Americans and Hispanic People.”
