Baltimore agrees to pay $6.4M to family of Freddie Gray, who died in police custody
The city of Baltimore has agreed to pay $6.4 million to the family of Family Gray, who died from a spinal injury in April after being taken into custody and placed in a police van.
The civil settlement still needs to be approved a city spending panel, report the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Baltimore Sun. A statement released by the city said the settlement is not an admission of liability and shouldn’t be interpreted as a judgment on the guilty of six police officers facing criminal charges in Gray’s death.
The deal would pay $2.8 million to Gray’s family in this fiscal year, and $3.6 million next year. The settlement also requires police officers to begin wearing body cameras, two unidentified sources told the Washington Post.
The six officers will be tried separately, a judge ruled last week. Still pending is a motion to move the trials out of Baltimore.
