In the latest chapter of its expansion saga, the largest law firm in Indianapolis has opened an office in Los Angeles.

The new Barnes & Thornburg outpost will initially be staffed by five lawyers from the Los Angeles office of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. However, a sixth, who now serves as the managing partner of Akin Gump’s Los Angeles office, David Allen, also plans to join Barnes & Thornburg in the same role as soon as he concludes a pending client matter, the 550-attorney firm says in a press release (PDF).

“This highly talented and cohesive group of lawyers, who share our cultural values and have a proven track record in building a successful Los Angeles office, offered us a rare opportunity to expand into the Los Angeles market, which has become a strategic priority of the firm,” says Alan Levin, the managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg, in the release.

Members of the group focus on complex litigation, labor and employment, and entertainment, media and intellectual property matters, augmenting core practice areas at the firm.

The new office will be the 12th for the firm, which has also expanded into Atlanta, Minneapolis and Ohio and seen its Chicago office grow significantly in recent years.

The move leaves Akin Gump with approximately 78 lawyers in Los Angeles.
