Special surveillance cameras have been installed in four border states that routinely snap time-stamped photos of license plates.
Backed by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the cameras take photos that also establish a vehicle’s geographic location. The information collected by the devices will be kept for up to two years and can be shared with other federal agencies and local authorities, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.
More cameras are planned in other states. However, Utah officials said no to a proposal to take such pictures there. The license-plate photos are intended to help pursue drug trafficking, immigration and terrorism cases.
