'Dumb judge' and other insults turn up in BigLaw lawyers' emails in NCAA eligibility suit

Holland & Knight lawyers involved in a lawsuit over an NCAA football player’s eligibility were caught hurling insults in emails obtained by GoLocalProv, including a reference to a “dumb judge” in Rhode Island.
The lawyers are representing the NCAA in a suit by Villanova All-American lineman Jake Picard, who is seeking another year of eligibility, which is being presided over by Rhode Island Superior Court Judge Brian Stern. The emails reveal unflattering discussions by the attorneys about Picard, his mother and more.
Holland & Knight senior counsel Natalie Molz wrote in one, “I am wondering whether we should ask Judge Whelan to strike their praecipe to discontinue under Rule 229(c). I have never done it before, but this feels like the right opportunity. Keeping it live in PA could make this easier for a dumb judge in RI.”
Neither Molz nor the NCAA responded to GoLocalProv’s requests for comments.
