Former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Friday for trying to solicit the murder of the prosecutor who put him behind bars for killing his third wife.

Peterson addressed the court for at least 25 minutes before he was sentenced for plotting the death of Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Peterson maintained that his solicitation was part of a scam to help another inmate reveal the plot and get a reduced sentence. Peterson said he was planning suicide and figured he wouldn’t be alive when the inmate came forward.

The sentence won’t begin until Peterson completes his 38-year sentence for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. His fourth wife is missing.
