Federal judge blasts 'dirty lawyer,' gives him jail time despite his help in cases against lawmakers
A disbarred New York Lawyer credited with helping the government successfully pursue corruption cases against three state senators and other government officials was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday by a federal judge who blasted him as a “dirty lawyer.”
The prosecution in the Manhattan case had sought no prison time for former Westchester lawyer Anthony Mangone, 42, due to his cooperation with the government. However, U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon said a no-prison plea deal in the Yonkers municipal corruption case was too lenient, reports the Journal News. Mangone had faced a maximum sentence of 45 years and federal guidelines called for a 30- to 36-month prison term.
“You, Mr. Mangone, were a dirty lawyer for many, many years,” McMahon said. “The story of your career is a truly pathetic one. You got away with quite a bit.”
Mangone apologized to his family at sentencing and said “all of my behavior has been self-inflicted.”
