Friends are wondering whether a head injury spurred unusual behaviors in a senior federal accused earlier this month of buying drugs from an undercover agent and cavorting with a stripper.

The arrest of U.S. District Judge Jack Camp, known as a “careful and courtly jurist,” stunned friends and colleagues, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Several friends told the newspaper that Camp had a severe head injury several years ago after he was thrown from a bicycle. The accident put him in intensive care for a week.

Jerry Froelich, a defense lawyer, told the Journal-Constitution he noticed a change after the accident. “Sometimes he’d stop and say ‘How are you doing?’ But other times he’d walk by like you weren’t there.”
