Nonprofit designates over 130 law firms as best places to work for LGBTQ equality; what firms made the list?

The Human Rights Campaign has given more than 130 law firms perfect scores on its 2021 corporate equality index, earning them a spot on its list of best places to work for LGBTQ equality.

The law firms are among 767 U.S. companies that achieved perfect scores, according to a press release and report released Thursday.

The Human Rights Campaign, a nonprofit LGBTQ advocacy group and political lobbying organization, invites law firms to participate in the ranking if they are on the American Lawyer list of the nation’s top 200 highest-grossing law firms. A total of 166 law firms participated, Thomson Reuters Legal reports.

HRC President Alphonso David told Reuters that the legal industry consistently outperforms other industries for its proportion of top-scoring firms.

Law firms and companies were reviewed under four criteria:

• Nondiscrimination policies

• Equitable benefits for LGBTQ workers and their families

• Support for an inclusive culture

• Corporate social responsibility

The report notes that the greatest strides have been made in adoption of transgender-inclusive initiatives.

Ninety-four percent of the Fortune 500 and 99.7% of all businesses rated on the corporate equality index have gender identity protections in their nondiscrimination policies—up from 3% and 5%, respectively, since the launch of the index in 2002. Seventy-one percent of the Fortune 500 and 91% of all businesses on the index offer transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage, up from zero in 2002.
