Virginia Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, is giving up control of the conservative group she founded for “new citizen activists.”

Spokeswoman Caitlin Carroll told the Washington Post that Virginia Thomas will take a back seat at Liberty Central so the group can continue its mission without the “distractions” of her media celebrity.

Virginia Thomas was in the news last month after reports surfaced that she left a voice message for Anita Hill, the woman who accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing. The message asked for an explanation and an apology.

Critics have questioned whether large donations to Liberty Central could raise recusal issues for Justice Thomas. Another recusal issue was raised when a memo signed by Virginia Thomas and briefly posted to the Liberty Central website asserted that the health care law is unconstitutional. Liberty Central’s chief operating officer later said Virginia Thomas had neither seen nor signed the memo, and it should not have been posted.
