Law firm among pioneering employers who OK worker use of medical marijuana

A small law firm is among a pioneering group of Illinois employers that are offering assurances they won’t punish their workers for using medical marijuana.
InHouse Physicians, one of the other participants, has amended its human resources manual to say that it will accommodate workers who use medical marijuana, CEO Jonathan Spero tells the Chicago Tribune (sub. req.).
Attorney Stuart Krauskopf says his 12-employee Chicago law firm doesn’t have a formal drug policy, but it will accommodate workers on a case-by-case basis, the newspaper reports. However, he doubts that he will permit medical marijuana use at the office because of the potential impact on clients.
“It is based on complete mutual respect, and the idea is that I don’t have to interfere in their well-being,” Krauskopf said of his informal policy toward employees.
Employers are adopting new rules in conjunction with a pilot medical marijuana program in Illinois, the Tribune notes.
