California lawyer Mohamed Salem says he doesn’t know why an alleged scammer chose his name and bar number to mislead homeowners trying to avoid foreclosure.

“What are there, like a quarter of a million attorneys registered with the state bar?” Salem said in an interview with the Recorder. “I don’t know why he chose my name. I’m baffled by that.”

Salem, who practices in Mill Valley, told the publication he’s never met the man accused of collecting fees for legal services that were never provided. He suspects the alleged scammer plucked his information off the state bar’s website.

The suspect, Nicolas Moscouplos, was charged with false impersonation and identity theft, according to the Recorder and the Contra Costa Times. Salem contacted authorities after he heard from three other lawyers who believed he was representing clients in foreclosure cases.
