A Chicago-area lawyer has been sentenced to six months in jail and four years of probation for stealing $137,000 from her law partner.

The lawyer, Ann Day, will likely be released in 28 days because of time already served, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Prosecutors had sought a prison term for Day, who was also ordered to repay the stolen money.

Day was accused of forging her partner’s name on checks and depositing firm checks into her personal account. She argues in a motion for a new trial that her business agreement with partner Karen Tietz gave her the authority to sign the checks, the Daily Herald reports.

Day formed the firm in west suburban St. Charles with Tietz after they met in church.

“I’m happy,” Tietz told the Sun-Times. “I get to be out for Christmas—and she doesn’t.”
