Mayor nixes new San Francisco law allowing bicyclists to make rolling stops at intersections
As he had vowed to do, San Francisco’s mayor is vetoing a new law that would have allowed bicyclists to roll through stop signs, siding with critics who said the measure would endanger lives, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The ordinance “does not promote balanced public safety for all the diverse users of our streets, rather, it trades safety for convenience,” wrote Mayor Ed Lee in a Tuesday letter to the city’s Board of Supervisors. “Therefore, this is not a policy I can allow this city to endorse.”
The rolling stop measure was OK’d by the board last week in a 6-5 vote. However, approval of eight members was required to beat a veto by the mayor.
