An upstate congresswoman from New York who once worked at two different well-known law firms is expected to be appointed to replace former Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Expected to be named today, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand was elected to Congress after a career in law, the New York Daily News reports. She attended law school at UCLA and clerked for a conservative federal appeals judge, Roger Miner.

She joined Davis Polk & Wardwell, but left to serve as special counsel to Andrew Cuomo when he was secretary of Housing and Urban Development. She later joined Boies, Schiller & Flexner.

Another law graduate, Caroline Kennedy, was being considered for the Senate seat until her withdrawal earlier this week. Polls showed that many voters preferred Cuomo, now the state attorney general, for the Senate seat left vacant when Hillary Clinton became secretary of state.
