Nun Who Thought Lawyer Was Sent By God Is Disappointed by Alleged Theft
A disbarred New Jersey lawyer has been indicted on charges that he stole about $35,000 from a nonprofit law firm founded by a nun.
Gary R. Thompson of Pequannock was charged with theft in a 45-count indictment, the Daily Record reports. His one-time employer, Sister Rosemary McSorley, is both a nun and a lawyer. She told the newspaper she hired Thompson for the $65,000-a-year job with Cornelian Community Counselors mostly because he was a neighbor.
”I just thought God sent him to me,” McSorley said. “I was very naive.”
Thompson allegedly stole the money between 2005 and 2006 by instructing clients to make out checks in his name, McSorley said.
Thompson was disbarred in June based on charges that he stole nearly $10,000 from two clients before joining McSorley’s law firm.
