Cooley is offering some incoming corporate associates the option of deferring start dates for a year in exchange for a $100,000 stipend.

Cooley has already pushed back start dates for all new associates until January 2024. The Silicon Valley-based law firm confirmed the new optional start date for first-year corporate associates to Law.com and Bloomberg Law.

Cooley is also reassigning some corporate associates who begin work in January to busier practices.

Cooley said it made the decision because of “current market conditions,” according to statements provided to Law.com and Bloomberg Law.

“We continue to be focused on ensuring that all our associates have the opportunity to receive meaningful development opportunities throughout their tenure with us,” the statement said.
