President Donald Trump has chosen a newly confirmed federal judge for a vacancy on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at New Orleans.
Louisiana Judge Anna St. John, the former president and general counsel of Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute—a nonprofit public interest law firm—was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the Eastern District of Louisiana in March, according to Law.com.
Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, told the publication that while her elevation has been quick, Trump also appointed judges to district courts and elevated them to appeals courts soon after in his first term.
Trump, in a June 29 post on Truth Social—his social media platform—announcing the nomination, noted that St. John “championed religious liberty, free speech and protecting women’s sports” in her work with the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute.
“Anna will continue to defend Americans’ constitutional rights on the 5th Circuit,” Trump also said.
If she is confirmed, St. John will fill a vacancy created by first-term Trump appointee Judge Kurt Engelhardt, who is taking senior status, Law.com reports.
