US Aid Worker Who Spent Xmas in Haitian Jail Has Been Released, in Latest Child-Kidnap Case
After spending Chrismas in jail, an American who sold his Massachusetts contracting business and went to Haiti to help with relief efforts after the earthquake there early this year has been released.
Accused by a Haitian man of taking his young son after the boy was brought to a hospital for treatment, Paul Waggoner was provisionally released when a Haitian judge declined to bring charges, reports the Boston Globe.
Waggoner and others with his Materials Management Relief Corps. say the boy died at the hospital and his father saw the body.
“Of course, Paul is completely innocent, and there is no doubt the final ruling will be favorable to him,’’ says his attorney, Louis Gary Lissade. “I pray this unfortunate situation will not discourage all the good American volunteers to continue to come to Haiti to help the Haitian people.’’
