Eighty-nine law firms achieved perfect scores from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for workplace treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender individuals, the foundation announced on Wednesday.

The ratings are part of the foundation’s 2015 Corporate Equality Index. Last year, 81 law firms got a perfect score.Only 30 law firms got a perfect score in the 2008 index.

This year, 149 of the nation’s 200 top-grossing law firms participated. Firms are rated on five criteria: inclusive nondiscrimination policies; employment benefits, including partner benefits and transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage; competency and accountability in regards to LGBT diversity and inclusion; public commitment to LGBT equality; and responsible citizenship.

Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, said in a press release that since the group begin surveying the nation’s top 200 law firms six years ago, “the legal field soon eclipsed other industries as having the most top-rated employers on their midst.”

“Today, it is inspiring to see so many law firm websites, and their booths at career fairs, proudly display the HRC Foundation emblem stating they are a ‘Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality,’ ” Fidas said.
