A Florida woman was cheated out of $13,000 by scammers who persuaded her she owed the money because she had failed to perform her jury duty, St. Petersburg police said.

Such schemes have been reported throughout the country. In this case, the woman was persuaded to cover the claimed debt through prepaid cash cards, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Another Tampa Bay Times article last month warned the public about such schemes.

Police spokesman Mike Puetz said the demand for cash-card payment is a danger sign. “Legitimate businesses, government entities, utility companies don’t operate that way,” he told the newspaper.
