Though the initial issues of his comic sold thousands of copies upon their release in 1992, Shadowhawk remains largely unknown; a shame, really, since district attorney Paul Johnstone broke new ground as the first HIV-positive character in comics. Creator Jim Valentino used the infection to present a man devoted to dishing out justice both in the courtroom and on the streets—despite growing weaker as the storyline progressed.
