U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has recalled an idyllic childhood in prior interviews. In the first photo, from left, is Stevens with his brothers Bill and Jim; in the second, Stevens pretends to kick his brother Bill. Both photos of the brothers were taken when they were at the family’s compound in Lakeside, Mich. The city was a summer retreat for many families who, like the Stevenses, lived in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood on the South Side.
