AG Now Seeking Lawyer-Pay Info from 700-Plus N.Y. School Districts

An ongoing probe by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo into the way school districts pay their lawyers has now expanded to request information from all of the more than 700 school districts in the state.
It has also expanded to seek information not only about the way the districts pay their counsel but the way they pay other professionals, such as consultants, according to the Associated Press.
As discussed in earlier ABAJournal.com posts, an ongoing investigation by Cuomo and federal authorities was sparked by news reports that some school district lawyers in private practice may have been paid as employees in order to qualify for state medical insurance and pension benefits. In one such arrangement, a lawyer reportedly earned a $60,000 salary and post-retirement benefits for part-time work as his law firm received more than $200,000 in legal fees.
